Author: Jessica Verday
Series: Yes - Book #3 in The Hollow series. Final book.
Cover: At first, I didn't have a care for the cover, but after finishing the book, the cover is absolutely fitting. The entire series have nice and simple covers. I think the cover is appropriate to the story and it's a really sweet symbol.
Rating: 3.5/5 for this book and 4/5 for the series. I love this series, but I do have to say I don't know how I feel about the ending. This is definitely a delightful book in terms of writing style. The ending just did not sit well for me.
Review: I remember reading books 1 & 2 and being really excited and curious of how Abbey and Caspian will be together forever. I wanted to root for their love in some way or any way possible. I was excited to pick up this book hoping to get a satisfaction that I wanted. Was this book satisfying to read? Yes and no.
Book 2 left everyone at a huge cliffhanger and I was happy that there wasn't a time jump, but instead a continuation of where we were left off. We're introduced to all the characters in the series again and learned more about them as well. Abbey and Caspian are still star-crossed lovers, Romeo & Juliet, two peas in a pod, etc. I am glad I finished the series and was able to see the outcome, but I don't think it was the right outcome. Overall, Verday wrote a great series, hence the 4/5, but it left me with a bad feeling in my gut.
I do feel as if the plot of this book was dragged on. I understand sometimes books need mystery and a sense of adventure, but this book felt so vague in the mystery. It was nice to read and learn about the minor characters, but at the same time, they didn't feel needed. I would also have to say that this book is dark in thoughts and talks about death in a wrong light. It glamorizes suicide which I do not agree with.
Guys, I'm really conflicted about how I feel with this book. There was this tension between Abbey and Caspian in books 1 & 2. In this book however, their relationship seems so stale. There's no development. It's a good 100 pages of Abbey being sad and wanting to bang Caspian but can't until November 1st. Like, I get it, they're in love and hormones are on the rise, but couldn't they do something else instead of laying in bed everyday talking about how much they want to touch each other?
!!!!!!!!SPOILERS!!!!!!!!
Well, at least they finally have sex. Honestly, while reading up to this part, I thought something bad would happen and those two will never ever seal the deal. Part of me was anxious thinking that Vincent might steal her away. I mean, she came home from prom alone and zero parents to stop him. It was like the perfect timing. Also, random side note, isn't prom usually in Spring? Like an end of the year dance to celebrate you surviving 4 years of high school? Let me know if I'm mistaken.
Alright, so after the sex scene, we finally get back to the actual plot. Hello! Vincent Drake is back ladies and gentlemen. This dude is an A+ stalker and knows how to mess with people's minds. Part of me understands why he did what he did. He wasn't ready to accept death 2.0.
I'm confused with the role of Cyn. Where did she get her gifts? Is she a shade too? I guess with how the ending turned out, there's no need to explain anything about her. She was just there and then gone.
Speaking of the ending, I'm not happy with it. I understand the idea of true love, but Abbey just in her own sense committed suicide. She has been so gloomy and talking about death like it was picking whether to have spaghetti or pizza for dinner. It felt wrong that she didn't sit down and think about what she's losing. Sure, she gets Caspian, but what about her friends and family? Her dreams? Okay, cool, she can still make her perfumes, but there will be no one there to enjoy it. If this was written not as a trade, but as Abbey jumping off a bridge, there would be a VERY different tone to the book and it's ending.
Overall, I know many people that love this book. I just want to say that these are my personal thoughts on the book. It's a good series, but could have been great. I just want to say that suicide is not the answer. I don't like how this book glamorized suicide to be "okay" because you'll be with your one true love. I don't think its right how this series ended, but to each their own.
Favorite Line:
"'Stuck like glue?'
'That's right,' he said softly, catching my eye. 'Stuck like glue.'
'Lucky for you I happen to like glue.'"
Top 3 Favorite Characters:
Acacia/ Cacey - She actually does her job thank freaking goodness. Her addiction to Coca Cola is cute and a twist to personality in comparison to the other characters. I like how she doesn't budge and follow the rules that were given to her from higher up.
Ben - Ben was hilarious. I absolutely love how much of a dork his personality is. He's is the "sexay-ist" man alive in that series and no one can deny it.
I've thought about who would be in my top 3 favorite characters from this book, but I cannot choose a third. Abbey irked me, and I can't forgive Caspian for letting Abbey take her own life. Everyone else was a huge minor character with little personality difference. I really did try and think who can take spot number three, but I simply don't like the other characters much. So, for that, sorry for not picking a third character.
